LYrics

1. You're Not Beautiful

Your hair’s not pretty

unless it’s gold

Your lips aren’t sweet

unless their bold

bright cardinal red,

so you’ve been told, but

All these messages,

saying you’re not beautiful

are wrong, wrong, wrong

You tint the windows of your soul,

soft baby blue, a hazy cold,

unlike the warm brown

that’s your own, and

All these messages,

saying you’re not beautiful

are wrong, wrong, wrong, yes

All these messages,

saying you’re not beautiful

are wrong, wrong, wrong

Despite all of the lies they tell—

there are many shades of beautiful

Tell me what do you believe,

human flesh or TV screen?

All the self-doubt they can sell,

or the simple truth that I will tell, that

All these messages,

saying you’re not beautiful

are wrong, wrong, wrong, yes

All these messages,

saying you’re not beautiful

are wrong, wrong, wrong, yes

All these messages,

saying you’re not beautiful

are wrong, wrong, wrong

2. Wake Up

Your pillow’s warm and whispering

to call in sick today

I know the feeling all too well

and still I have to say

Wake up—wake up—

Shake your lazy bones

Time to get a move on—

time to go—go—go

I know that it’s hard sometimes

just to make a livin’

And this world can be so cold

and so unforgivin’

When gonna be turns

could have been,

it’s easy to get blue

But when you’re down

there’s really only one thing left to do

Wake up—wake up—

Shake your lazy bones

Time to get a move on—

time to go—go—go

You might have the darndest dreams

dancing in your head

But you can’t set the world on fire

‘til you get out of bed

Show ‘em what you’re made of—

show ‘em that you’re tough

Scrape the bottom of your soul

and pray that it’s enough, and

Wake up—wake up—

Shake your lazy bones

Time to get a move on—

time to go—go—go

Wake up—wake up—

Shake your lazy bones

Time to get a move on—

time to go—go—go

Time to get a move on—

time to go—go—go

3. Maple Syrup

The dust balls in our pockets,

seemed heavy at the time

But burdens turned to blessings,

somewhere down the line

It takes thirteen gallons,

to fill a mason jar

And at least a dozen women

to be half the things you are

Let me tell you darlin’,

what it boils down to

Is take away all I don’t need,

and all that’s left is you

We’ve had our share of heartaches—

been through some tough times

But as days and years evaporate,

you’re still by my side

It takes thirteen gallons,

to fill a mason jar

And at least a dozen women

to be half the things you are

Let me tell you darlin’,

what it boils down to

Is take away all I don’t need,

and all that’s left is you

If you listen closely—

awake, or in my sleep

You’ll notice, when I speak your name,

it always sounds so sweet

It takes thirteen gallons,

to fill a mason jar

And at least a dozen women

to be half the things you are

Let me tell you darlin’,

what it boils down to

Is take away all I don’t need,

and all that’s left is you

4. I Need to Get My Hands a Little Dirty

Well, it’s okay to think

to make your livin’

to know what all these

bits and bytes might mean—

get paid for miniscule manipulations

of images that live in some machine

I need to get my hands a little dirty

A little gritty gunk beneath my nails,

some calluses to take away the hurtin’

I need to put my hands

to something real

Satisfaction comes

when you can feel it

trickle in the sweat upon your brow

Bend your knees

and heave to lift your spirit

Lips can’t pray

the way your back knows how

I need to get my hands a little dirty

A little gritty gunk beneath my nails,

some calluses to take away the hurtin’

I need to put my hands

to something real

Flesh and blood, skin and bone—

I am no machine

I need to feel life with my hands—

if you know what I mean

I need to get my hands a little dirty

A little gritty gunk beneath my nails,

some calluses to take away the hurtin’

I need to put my hands

to something real

I need to get my hands a little dirty

I need to put my hands

to something real

I need to get my hands a little dirty

I need to put my hands

to something real

I need to get my hands a little dirty

I need to put my hands

to something real

I need to get my hands a little dirty

I need to put my hands

to something real

5. Sleeping With the Angels

In this picture of you,

in which your eyes are closed

I can see you’re dreaming—

of what, I’d like to know

Are you sleeping with the angels—

nestled in their wings?

Is your smile the way you’ve chosen

to tell me of these things?

Of all the pictures of you,

that I have been sent

This one is my fav’rite—

this picture of content

When I’m feeling anxious—

unsure of what to do

When I need assurance—

I just look at you

Gazing at your picture,

in which your eyes are closed

I can see you’re dreaming—

yes, and I suppose

You are sleeping with the angels—

nestled in their wings

Your smile’s the way you’ve chosen

to tell me of these things

You are sleeping with the angels—

nestled in their wings

Your smile’s the way you’ve chosen

to tell me of these things

You are sleeping with the angels

You are sleeping with the angels

Sleeping with the angels

6. Two

He kayaks down the river-

that starts in grandma's kitchen

As he shoots the rapids-

it's just the faucet drippin'

caught up in a whirlpool

that he can't explain

circling his fingers and

heading down the drain

Two-Two-tell me what it's like to be two

He couldn’t be happier,

playing with a stick

A big wet smile upon his face,

the puppy dog just licked

Splashing in his kiddy pool,

diggin’ in the sand

‘til it’s time to go inside and

play with pots and pans

Two-Two-tell me what it's like to be two

In an outfit whose design

includes a hero’s cape

At naptime, with his furry friends

he plans his first escape

A little startled by the sudden

greeting from the floor

He’d cry for reassurance, but

his freedom means much more

Two-Two-tell me what it's like to be two

Black scribbles on white paper—

psychiatrist's ink-blot

he peels the crayon wrappers—

coloring his thoughts

To stir the fuzzy monster

he merely pushes Pops

Giggles when his grandma

tells the monster "stop"

Two-Two-tell me what it's like to be two

Some might fear an earthquake—

he just grins instead

knowin’ that means daddy's going to

bounce him on the bed

And he is quite certain

to chuckle with delight

when anyone at any time

declares a pillow fight

Two-Two-tell me what it's like to be two

He loves to watch

the way things work,

as fans go round and round

And though he likes to

stack up blocks,

he'd rather knock them down

He likes to run in circles—

to show off his fast feet

And he finds refrigerator

magnets really neat

Two-Two—tell me what it's like to be two

Daddy’s high speed horsey ride

out-gallops all the rest

but when it comes to giving hugs,

mommy is the best

The captain of cute—

he’s been aptly dubbed

Calm and content in

knowin’ that he’s loved

Two-Two-tell me what it's like to be two

Two-Two-tell me what it's like to be two

Tell me what it’s like—

tell me what it’s like—

tell me what it's like to be two

7. Little Things

It seemed like such a little thing—

how you first looked and smiled at me

There’s something in the way you say

that I’m alright and we’re okay

The hurt you let go—poem you saved—

what I forgot that you forgave

The way you reach to take my hand—

the soft touch as your long hair lands

And dangles lightly on my skin—

reminding me once again

It’s been little thing after little thing

That make this love just so damn big

So damn big—too damn big—

when you add up all the little things

When I’m a rock that just won’t budge,

you’re my sweet much needed nudge

You coax me out to take a walk,

to turn the mindless TV off

The best of me—you encourage,

with gentle tone and jagged words

To handle all this big world brings

and still take time for little things, and

It’s been little thing after little thing,

That make this love just so damn big

So damn big—too damn big—

when you add up all the little things

It’s been little thing after little thing,

That make this love just so damn big

So damn big—too damn big—

when you add up all the little things

8. Pretty Lady

Pretty lady what’s your story?
Pretty lady where’re you from?

Pretty lady where’re you goin'?

Pretty lady can I come along?

Is your heart ripe for the taking?

Once again, am I too late?

Should I thank the Greek god Eros?

Should I curse him for my fate?

Pretty lady what’s your story?

Pretty lady where’re you from?

Pretty lady where’re you goin’?

Pretty lady can I come along

with you—with you—oh, with you

With ev’ry glance another question

If these words could find their way

to escape my tongue to ask you

This is what they’d have to say

Pretty lady what’s your story?

Pretty lady where’re you from?

Pretty lady where’re you goin’?

Pretty lady can I come along?

Pretty lady what’s your story?

Pretty lady where’re you from?

Pretty lady where’re you goin’?

Pretty lady can I come along with you—

with you—with you— oh, with you

9. Small Town, Big Dreams

Gina is sittin’ on the front porch railin’

showing off her painted toes

Tryin’ to look cool

in the dog-day weather—

waitin’ for someone she don’t know

Robby is wadin’ in the knee-deep water,

Carryin’ his favorite fishin’ pole

Catchin’ a bit of lazy summer—

feelin’ that cold creek water flow

Small town, big dreams—

things aren’t always what they seem

Small town, big dreams—

pack your prayers and come with me

Small town, big dreams

Patty is peekin’ through

half closed curtains,

watching as people wander by

Willy’s throwin’ rocks

at empty bottles—

loves to hear ‘em shatter,

but he don’t know why

Johnny has got a wicked curve ball—

practices when the milking’s done

Pretending the barn side

is Mickey Mantle,

and he hasn’t hit a single one

Small town, big dreams—

things aren’t always what they seem

Small town, big dreams—

pack your prayers and come with me

Small town, big dreams

I ain’t goin’ nowhere,

ask the people in this town

But I’ve got a dream

so it won’t get me down

I know in my lifetime,

it ain’t comin’ true

It don’t really matter,

cause it’s carryin’ me through

Small town, big dreams—

things aren’t always what they seem

Small town, big dreams—

pack your prayers and come with me

Small town

Small town, big dreams—

things aren’t always what they seem

Small town, big dreams—

pack your prayers and come with me

Small town, big dreams

Gina is sittin’ on the front porch railin’

showing off her painted toes

Beggin’ for the world to notice—

waitin’ for someone she don’t know

10. Fingerprints

On ev’rything we touch,

we leave our oil and sweat

If this were a crime—

they’d call it evidence

But love’s the only thing

this sweat and oil will prove

And I thank the Lord

for letting me leave

my fingerprints on you

Fingerprints on you—oh, on you

I can count the teardrops—

add up all the pain

But I can’t quantify

how good for me you’ve been

I don’t care

what a judge and jury may decide

Pardon me, but clemency

is us still doin’ time

Interrogate me if you must—

I haven’t got a clue

Why after all this time

you love me like you do

On ev’rything we touch,

we leave our oil and sweat

I swear that my conviction to you

isn’t over yet

And my guilty verdict

is long overdue

As I plead, “please let me leave

more fingerprints on you”

Fingerprints on you—oh, on you

Fingerprints on you—oh, on you

Fingerprints on you

Fingerprints on you

11. I Just Wanna Dance

I just wanna let my hair down—

I just wanna dance

Kick my shoes off, sing along—

give this night a chance

I just wanna dance

Oh-oh, hey-hey—

you’ve gotta understand

I just wanna move my feet,

shout, and clap my hands

I just wanna, I just wanna,

I just wanna dance

Take my hand and lead me

out onto the floor

I just want a good time,

oh, and nothing more

I don’t want a romance,

not lookin’ for someone

I just wanna kick my heels up—

have a little fun

Oh-oh, hey-hey—

you’ve gotta understand

I just wanna move my feet,

shout, and clap my hands

I just wanna, I just wanna,

I just wanna dance

I just wanna let my hair down—

I just wanna dance

Kick my shoes off, sing along—

give this night a chance

I just wanna dance

Oh-oh, hey-hey—

you’ve gotta understand

I just wanna move my feet,

shout, and clap my hands

I just wanna, I just wanna,

I just wanna dance

I just wanna, I just wanna,

I just wanna dance

I just wanna, I just wanna,

I just wanna dance

12. Maybe the Moon

Maybe if you hadn’t hurt me—

if I hadn’t bled

If you hadn’t turned me

ev’ry way but loose and then

If you hadn’t dropped me,

like a stone

Maybe the moon

wouldn’t seem so alone

Maybe if your nails

hadn’t sunk in quite so deep

I wouldn’t see you face

when I’m fast asleep

and I wouldn’t wonder

at the color of your eyes

Is their blue more like turquoise

or the summer sky?

And maybe if your love

hadn’t warmed me to the bone

Maybe the moon

wouldn’t seem so alone

Maybe if you hadn’t told me

ev’rywhere you’ve been

If you hadn’t held me

while the walls were crashing in

Maybe if you’d told me

it was all for fun

I wouldn’t have thought

that I was the one

Maybe if the moon

really was a man,

I think that maybe

he would understand

Climb a little higher in the sky tonight—

let me know that somehow

things will be alright

And maybe if you hadn’t dropped me,

like a stone

Maybe the moon

wouldn’t seem so alone

Maybe the moon

wouldn’t seem so alone

13. Lady Luck

Hey, you look like a winner—

wanna take a chance?

If you know the odds—

can pick up on a tell

Know when to fold and when to bluff,

you might do quite well

But there are games that can’t be won,

if you play long enough

Sooner or later,

we all run out of luck, and

Lady Luck will hustle you—

start you on a roll

Let you win until she has you

under her control

Only thing in this world

that’s a dead sure bet

Ain’t a child ever born

who can beat her yet,

and Lady Luck will hustle you

You can’t win if you don’t play

There are times that I think,

maybe I should try

Think of, with ten million bucks,

the things that I might buy

Oh Yeah

But odds are odds,

and they’re against you—

those are just the facts

A lottery is no more than

a voluntary tax, and

Lady Luck will hustle you—

start you on a roll

Let you win until she has you

under her control

Only thing in this world

that’s a dead sure bet

Ain’t a child ever born

who can beat her yet,

and Lady Luck will hustle you

Lady Luck, lady luck will hustle you

Hustle, hustle you

You’re not afraid to take a little gamble are you?

Don’t let a couple easy wins

catch you off your guard

If you challenge Lady Luck,

she’s gonna play you hard

She’s got an ace in the hole—

a couple up her sleeve

It’s not how much you win,

it’s what you’re left with

when you leave, and

Lady Luck will hustle you—

start you on a roll

Let you win until she has you

under her control

The only thing in this world

that’s a dead sure bet

Ain’t a child ever born

who can beat her yet,

and Lady Luck Feeling lucky?

will hustle you

Lady Luck, lady luck will hustle you

Lady Luck will hustle, hustle you

Better luck next time

14. Bad Vision

I need a woman with bad vision—

simply because

Only a woman with bad vision

could overlook my flaws

I don’t need to be nagged about

the things that I can’t change

The way I look or a sense of humor

that’s a little strange

Perhaps my table manners

could use to be improve

and I could surely stand to lose my

ogre attitude

I need a woman with bad vision—

simply because

Only a woman with bad vision

could overlook my flaws

I need a woman with bad vision—

anyone can see

Only a woman with bad vision

could love the likes of me

We won’t talk about the messes

that I leave behind

The third thing that I bought because of

two that I can’t find

All the junk I claim is treasure—

with which I will not part

My twelve unfinished projects

or the thirteenth that I’ll start

I need a woman with bad vision—

simply because

Only a woman with bad vision

could overlook my flaws

I need a woman with bad vision—

anyone can see

Only a woman with bad vision

could love the likes of me

I need a woman who talks a lot, so

when my mind goes missin’

She’s too busy yappin’

to notice I don’t listen

I need a woman with bad vision—

simply because

Only a woman with bad vision

could overlook my flaws

I need a woman with bad vision—

anyone can see

Only a woman with bad vision

could love the likes of me

Only a woman with bad vision

could love the likes of me

15. By the Time You Get to Know Me

By the time you get to know me,

I’m guessing I’ll be gone

What better thing to leave you

than a prayer inside a song?

I’m hoping you’ll be handsome,

that you will grow tall

and that you’ll be much kinder

and wiser than us all

I’m praying you’ll be lucky

in life and in love

That I’ll get to watch you

as an angel from above

I’m hoping it’s not easy,

so you grow tough and strong

And closed doors only lead you

to the place where you belong

I pray you’ll learn the value

of friendship and respect

And always find a ray of hope

when nothing else is left

I hope that you take comfort

in the simplest of things

And are truly thankful

for the chance each new day brings

May hunger drive you forward,

but patience be your guide

May your greatest treasure

be the spirit down inside

By the time you get to know me,

I’m guessing I’ll be gone

What better thing to leave you

than a prayer inside a song?

By the time you get to know me,

I’m guessing I’ll be gone

What better thing to leave you

than a prayer inside a song?

By the time you get to know me

By the time you get to know me

By the time you get to know me
